The Composition and Sound Design Network

Somewhere awhile back Joe was posting about a way to record vocals without an iso booth. It was basically taking a small box, stuffing some foam in it and off you go.

The pictures that were up were very nice looking and Joe actually made a couple but I didn't have a chance to pick it up yet.

Well, I had a quick pickup session last week and since I lost my beautiful recoding room about a year ago, I had no place to record so I had to put together a make shift head in a box recording system.

It wasn't pretty but it ended up sounding pretty good. I found the quietest conference room in the building and set it up. It still sounds a little like a conference room, but I have heard much worse.

Tell me what you think of this monstrosity.

Below I included a few audio clips of the session.

WARNING: THE AUDIO IS NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

I suggest throwing the headphones on to listen.

Notice the integrated "trash can" technology that lifts the box up to speaking level.

This one should be a caption contest.

That's awesome! Sounds good too, not too boxy or too roomy. Good application of the technique. I promise I will get that rig to you soon.

Do I recognize that foam?

haha, you DO recognize that foam. I had forgotten where it came from.

I am actually playing in the city tomorrow at Katerinas - east irving park - if you want to stop by for some pre mardi gras festivities.

Here is a video for the game.

it contains all of the following:
1) Original speech session in my old studio (2 years ago)
2) Second speech session done in local studio (6 months ago)
3) 2 Head in a box sessions (last month)
4) 1 "Oh my god we forgot a line, quick throw up a mic in your office and lets get it" session. (yesterday)

the last speech call is blaringly obvious to me cause it sounds pretty bad. The other ones all blend in pretty well.

Its amazing how the all the explosions just equal out evrything.

Oh yea, the beginning logo music is for a different logo movie. I didn't have time to make the new one before the video had to be done.

Well done! I've done something similar, but not nearly as elegant.

haha... I wouldn't call that elegant, but thanks!
